Episode 31: How A Dog Trainer Was Able To Go Full Time In Her Business & Now Have A Facility & A Team Of 5 All Within 1 Year with Jessica Gleason

Today we are doing a client spotlight of our client Jessica Gleason of Pups With A Purpose!

When Jessica first came to us she was burnt out trying to grow her dog training business as she worked full time in her 9-5

The stress of it all was taking a toll on her physical health, mental health, and the relationships that mattered most to the point she knew something had to change, but she wasn’t sure what or how to change things because of the crippling fear she had around going full time in her business and letting go of the safety of the 9-5

Fast forward to today after coaching through limiting beliefs she had

Not only has she quit her 9-5, but within 1 year of quitting she has been able to grow her team to a team of 5, open her own facility, AND heal from burnout & all of the stress related illnesses that were blocking her dreams of starting a family

Tune in to today’s episode to hear her full story

00:00:02.160 --> 00:00:32.780
All right, I think it's working. Awesome. All right, guys, I am so excited for today's episode, because I have actually my first ever client, Jessica Gleason of pups with a purpose. And not only was she my client, but she has been an amazing dog trainer to our two fur babies. And so I am so excited to have you on Jessica, to kind of just share your story of entrepreneurship and kind of our work together and how it's evolved.

00:00:33.859 --> 00:00:36.979
Yeah, thank you for having me. I'm excited. Yeah.

00:00:36.978 --> 00:00:43.298
So for people who are meeting you for the first time, what is your business? And who do you help?

00:00:43.659 --> 00:01:18.780
Yeah? Um, so, yes, I own pups with a purpose dog training, which is an Omaha based dog training business that specializes in training therapy dogs, so dogs that volunteer in schools, hospitals, assisted living centers and but we've grown. We offer puppy classes, structured daycare and private training sessions as well. So we're kind of a one stop shop. I love it, yeah, and even like daycare and stuff, right? Mm, hmm,

00:01:18.780 --> 00:01:34.340
yeah, yes, we started our structured daycare program, so it's small groups focusing on teaching dogs appropriate play and then enriching their time while they're while they're with us.

00:01:31.939 --> 00:01:34.340
Yeah,

00:01:34.340 --> 00:04:41.800
I love it. And you know how I feel about pups with a purpose? I mean, I can't recommend it enough to anyone who's in Omaha, but tell me a little bit about, you know, what kind of like business and life looked like when we had first met. And you know, I know a lot of it was like through conversations we had during our training sessions and chatting about that, but if you wouldn't mind just sharing, like, what that looked like, Yeah, I think we kind of were on the burnout train together there for a while. Yes, but yes. So when, before I worked with you, I was working full time at a nonprofit, and then I was also building my business on the side, so and, you know, doing other life things as well. You know, maintaining social life and, or trying to and and, and trying to give time to my husband as well, and, and it was I was so overwhelmed and being pulled so many different places and, And then I was diagnosed with the stress related condition that that decrease my likelihood of of growing a family, which was one of my main goals at that time in my life, was was to have a baby, and we were really struggling for a long time to do that, and it was taking an additional toll on on every aspect of my life, because of the stress of of working full time, running My business, and then feeling like I'm failing at one of the most biological things for a woman to do, you know, is to have babies. So um, so through our conversations, just naturally and you you starting your coaching business, we talked about how how to reach those goals realistically, not only in in how to manage my time and make decisions regarding business and life, yeah, but also how to take the leap of quitting my full time job and doing that so as you all can hear, I did have a baby. Yes, yes, finding her voice. She's hanging out right next to me, and she might make an on camera appearance if she's not going to she's going to be fussy here.

00:04:41.800 --> 00:04:45.639
Let me see she is totally fine.

00:04:48.160 --> 00:06:26.658
Hi, hello, she is six months old. So yeah, now it's a whole new a whole new juggle. But, um, but yeah, through, through working together. Where I was able to find the courage to quit my job and then and then also frame my business in a way where, where I could, you know, make a living, but also live my life with with my husband and my family. So that was the big that was the big goal, and then to have to have a little one, yes. And I love it, because it's like, yes, they all have come true in so many ways, in so many beautiful ways. And you know, when we first met, yes, I remember vividly just kind of how we both were, kind of it still like working and then building some other things on the side. And it really became like just kind of a way that we connected. And you know, you talk a lot about just how that fear of taking the leap, and then when you did eventually take the leap, how it then became a thing of, how do I, how do I transition into this role, and being pulled in so many different directions? Can you talk a little bit about, like, how that was really affecting the way you were showing up, not just in business, but in life.

00:06:27.800 --> 00:07:16.379
Yeah, and I absolutely, I feel like, you know, when I was working full time and running the business, and even after, I quit my full time job, that I would I would put family on the back burner, like that would be my first go to would be, oh, because I was so nervous that, like, I wouldn't make sales for the month. And so if clients were like, oh, I need to, I need a Friday evening session. Or, you know, you know, there I was.

00:07:11.999 --> 00:07:27.019
I was very lenient with my schedule. Whatever worked best for them, I would cancel plans and and and work with them.

00:07:28.699 --> 00:09:26.899
And so, yes, it took a toll on on my family life, for sure, and what should be the opposite way, where, you know, I got into owning a business so that I could spend more time with my husband, with my family, with my parents, things like that. So, really working on creating healthy boundaries with clients, and then knowing that that is a healthy part of business ownership and and they didn't like they, they still came and scheduled sessions. Yes, even though I didn't have, you know, Friday nights, or I didn't work every night or things like that, yeah. And I think that that's one of the biggest misconceptions that people believe, is that entrepreneurship is what's going to give me freedom. Yeah, right, like time, freedom and just the ability to be to make my own schedule, and then we get into it, and it's like, oh my gosh, now I have to set boundaries and deal with uncomfortable situations or conversations with people to set those boundaries, and then it creates this whole story of like, am I gonna fail if I do this? And yeah, I know we worked through a lot of those things. Of you know, the stories that were coming up around, if I set this boundary, what's going to happen? And so, you know, when we, when you kind of like, worked through those things, how did that really just kind of like, help you as far as being able to set the boundaries in those things.

00:09:27.559 --> 00:11:11.519
Yeah, I think it helped a lot because, yeah, we we touched on things, on ideas that I had about business and money and relationships and and getting to the root of why I feel, you know, a certain way instead of just and I still use those tools, even today, when you know, I mean my baby. Six months old, and so I've been going through this major transition this year, and I'm still and, yeah, I'll use those, those tools of asking myself why I'm feeling this way or or if the worst thing happened, you know that I'm telling myself will happen. What you know what? What do you know? How do I? How do I manage that, right? And then, most often, the worst thing doesn't happen. So, yeah, it's been, it's been really helpful, not only to work through some of those beginning, you know, insecurities and working out my schedule, but also because business ownership, there's always, I mean, there's always something going on. And if you don't have skills or or the confidence in yourself to believe, you know, believe in yourself, that it'll work out then you could, I mean, it'll, yes, it'll kill you. You'll have so much, so much stress. So yes, yeah.

00:11:12.240 --> 00:12:12.120
And I think a lot of that was, like, at the very beginning, we worked through so much of the, like, the fears around that, yeah, and how, you know, I say this all the time, but it's like burnout really stems from this, like, need to prove your worth, unintentionally, and it creates those self sabotaging habits of squeezing people In, or, you know, dropping prices for people, or whatever it is that, you know, just automatically happen. Yeah, I wanted to talk a little bit about just kind of, there was one particular thing that came to mind when I think about working with you, and it a lot of it was the realisticness of what you could achieve in a year, or even, like two years, right? And I think there was a lot of stories around that too.

00:12:13.440 --> 00:14:48.820
Would you be comfortable sharing just kind of like, what stories were coming up for you around, like, realisticness of goals, yeah, yeah, I would say I yeah, like I was playing it safe, and I did have all these big dreams, but was really nervous about, about letting me think about those, you know, those things and, and I think, yeah, so I, I did have goals and plans and of like opening a facility, And I did, and I did that which was a way quicker than what I thought I was going to, which was really cool, and that really catapulted our Business, and of having a professional space which was really, I mean, it was like such a whirlwind, and it's been kind of a whirlwind ever since, but, um, but, yeah, I feel so proud of myself that I was able to accomplish something so big. You know, of of of that's kind of in the dog training industry. You know, a lot of people do start out of training out of their homes, or training in clients homes, or in parks and and a lot of people their goals are to have a facility where we can hold classes and and, and so I felt, yeah, just so proud that we were able to do that in such a short time. We opened our facility in 2022 and I started pups with a purpose in 2019 so three years, and a lot of that time I was working part time, yeah, on my business. So I really think that quitting my full time job and and focusing all of my all of my time, not all of my time, but all of my work time, you know, on my business, really helped provide me clarity of what what I wanted and and the energy to to work on those goals for sure.

00:14:49.059 --> 00:17:01.139
Yeah, um, yeah, because I remember us talking just about like, what is your epic audacious goal? Yeah, right, that. One of the exercises that I take all of my clients through is, what is the end vision, right, like? And it might not be the final end vision, but what is it that if you could have anything you wanted, you could have it, and a lot of it was like, Is this realistic, you know, in this time frame, and all these stories about what's realistic, and can I hit this or not? And it's amazing to see just how, like when we flip the switch of removing some of those stories, how everything kind of, just like, started to fall into place, yeah, yeah. And that's how Yes I have, yeah. I've always operated my business of following, you know, clients tell me what they want. So when we first started, I was only doing private sessions, and people would ask me and ask me about puppy classes. And then, so I created, you know, I, I collaborated with another trainer to create puppy classes, and that is one of our, I mean, we're sold out of puppy classes every single month. And then people asked about, you know, a safe place for their dogs to play during the day, and and so we created that and, and that led us, you know, to funding our business. So, yeah, I've always, I've always, kind of ran my business with my clients. Will tell me what they want and, and if the door opens, you know, if the door, then I should take it and so it was really cool to see all of those things fall into place where clients had been asking, asking for some of these things, we were finally able to to do it.

00:16:55.899 --> 00:17:01.679
Yeah, yeah, yes. I love it.

00:17:03.179 --> 00:17:21.559
So you mentioned a lot about what we worked through and how it's led to certain things kind of becoming a reality. Can you share with us, just like how the coaching tools have really helped you, and what business in life looks like now.

00:17:21.798 --> 00:17:37.759
Yeah. So, yeah, I think. And I remember one of our first meetings, you were asking me about goals, professionally and personally.

00:17:38.239 --> 00:18:31.699
And yeah, I said, well, one of my biggest goals is to create a life where I can, I can start a family and spend time with my my kids, you know, and my husband and so that, you know, working through that, and and, and then I remember, on our first session, I was like, Well, I would want to start a family, you know, in six months like that was kind of my goal. But life works out the way it needs to be. I wasn't, I wasn't emotionally or ready in my business to, you know, to have a baby at that time. And so Everly came right at the perfect time.

00:18:31.699 --> 00:19:13.919
I feel like I had my team in, in this spot where I could step away for for some time and and they could handle, they could handle things without me having to be so hands on, which is, which is what I wanted. So, yeah, so that is, yeah. And it just took time for me to to create that, which is okay, you know, I always wanted it to happen so so fast, but I'm glad how the timing, the timing, just worked out how it needed to be.

00:19:14.278 --> 00:19:31.159
But yeah, working through some of that coaching of, yeah, I feel like, like I was putting up so much, so many roadblocks, right? You would work on exercises, and you'd be like, Well, why do you feel that way?

00:19:28.098 --> 00:19:31.159
And I'd be like, I don't know.

00:19:31.159 --> 00:23:16.440
And you're like, can't say I don't know. And I was like, No, I don't want to, you know, I don't want to, I don't want to uncover that. I don't want to work through that, but, but I needed to, I needed to work through, you know, those things, in order to, in order to build my business, in order to build my team, so that I could, yeah, step away, which has honestly been. So it's been so incredibly helpful. I mean, not only this year has have I had a you know, we've grown our family, but I mean, we've been dealing with health issues. My My mother got sick, and, you know, my husband needed to have surgery. So there were so many, so many reasons of why, you know, like, like, it couldn't just be me in my business, you know, I had to, I had to build my team. And I don't think I would have ever done that if, if I would have let those limiting beliefs, you know, live, live in my head, yeah, yeah. Would you mind sharing, like, what some of the biggest limiting beliefs that were holding you back, you know, um, led to this transformation, yeah. So I think, um, a lot of them had to do with, like, my confidence in decision making, so that that I would make the wrong decision, you know, or and, and that is reaches to all aspects of my life. So when, whenever a big decision would be needed for the business, I would kind of freeze and and then, and and then things wouldn't move forward, because I just was so frozen in fear that I would choose the wrong thing. And so we had to work through that a lot of like, so if I choose the wrong thing in my head, what will happen? Yes, like, well, this, this might happen, and, and things like that, and, and then also, just like, yeah, negative self talk, we used a lot like, I still use a lot of techniques about how you would say, well, you would never say that about someone else and so, so yeah, as I'm as my role in my in My company, has changed drastically. This year. I've had to, yeah, I've had to also be confident in in my decision making and then and then in my role as a leader in the company, yeah, yeah. And you've done that beautifully. I mean, how big is your team now? Um, yeah. So we have three trainers, and then myself, and then two daycare staff, and then I actually have two trainers in training. So I know, yeah, it's so fun to like, you know, help people find their passion in in dog training and, yeah, yeah, bring them on to the team. So I love it, and I love that you're still using the tools. Um, where do you plan on taking the business next?

00:23:16.799 --> 00:24:20.539
Yeah. So I mean, I was funny. I was just talking with my team about this over the weekend, and I think we are focusing on building our programs that we we don't want to do at all anymore. We want to specialize in things that me and my team are passionate about and what we do the best. And so I think the next phase of pups with a purpose is really, really focusing on those programs and and, and almost editing like what is not serving us, what is taking too much of my time, what you know, and and I'm actually it's a terrifying process, but I'm actually so excited about this next phase, because I think it will, I think it'll just make us even better.

00:24:21.618 --> 00:25:06.720
And for a long time, I thought in order to be successful, I had to do everything, all the dog training, yes, and, and I'm finding that's not the case. So it's another, just another way to be burned out. So I want not only myself but my whole team to focus on what serves us as our company and what we're really good at. So, yeah, I don't, I don't quite, I mean, we're not, we're not there yet. I don't know what it's going to look like, but I know that I. That it's going to be good and it's and it's going to be good for the community, and it's going to be good for us.

00:25:06.838 --> 00:25:13.078
Yes, yes, I love it. I love it.

00:25:06.838 --> 00:25:38.779
And yes, like you were saying that whole thing of like, sometimes as creatives, as entrepreneurs, right? Our biggest inhibitor leading to burnout is that we have so many ideas and all these creative things and learning when to set boundaries with ourselves can be a very tough process. Yes, yes, all right.

00:25:38.779 --> 00:25:49.660
Well, if anyone wants to find you. Where can they go to find pups with a purpose? Yeah, we're on Facebook and Instagram, so pups with a purpose training.

00:25:49.960 --> 00:26:12.660
And then you can also find our website, pups with a purpose.com and our building is in Millard, so we were by appointment only, but if you'd like to check this out, reach out and we will. We can give you a tour talk about our facility and our programs, but, but the website is very detailed.

00:26:13.980 --> 00:26:29.720
Yes, so guys again, the links will all be in the show notes down below. Thank you so much, Jessica for coming on to just kind of share your story and share how you're going to be kind of evolving and continuing to impact the community.

00:26:29.960 --> 00:26:32.719
Yeah, thanks for having me. I'm excited.

00:26:32.839 --> 00:26:49.180
Yeah. All right, I'm going to hit end record perfect. Maybe this is so weird that it's doing that I've never had this issue before. I.
